Have you ever had people confuse your psoriasis for dandruff? Comments from hair dressers over the years about how I should use a dandruff shampoo or telling me I have a dry scalp has really been quite irritating. Not to mention every time you go to wear a dark colored top you are checking your shoulders all day to make sure it doesn’t look like your head just had a snow storm. So, if you are like me, you probably have tried several different shampoos and creams, OTC’s and prescriptions, but sometimes it just gets bad. Here are some tips on how to handle it when your scalp psoriasis is out of control and you don’t want to just hide in your house.
1. Tell those that you are around on a daily basis about your scalp psoriasis. Tell them what psoriasis is if they don’t know already. Tell them that you sometimes feel embarrassed. People are more understanding than you think and if they know that you have that condition and you are very concious of the problem, they won’t feel the need to point it out to you.
2. If you go to a hairdresser and they make comments or don’t want to touch your scalp because of it, you’ve gone to the wrong salon. I usually let my hairdresser know if my psoriasis is inflamed at the moment so they have a heads up. No pun intended. And, most stylists I have shared that with, say it’s no big deal, they have it themselves, they have plenty of clients with it, etc. etc. If you are in a good salon the hairdresser should have been schooled in what this condition is and trained in how to take care of it.
3. Wear light colored tops. If you are just having one of those days/weeks/months where your psoriasis is relentless, wear a light colored top, so people won’t notice any flakes that may fall on your shoulders.
4. Brush your hair at night and apply any psoriasis treatment cream that you may have. This will help to eliminate flakes.
5. Wash your hair in the morning with a shampoo like Nizoral or SkinZinc’s Skincylic shampoo. This will get the excess cream and loosened flakes out of your hair and help with the inflammation.
6. Comb your hair, going down to the scalp to help eliminate any flakes, and then apply a cream directly to the scalp.All of these tips have helped me feel more comfortable with my scalp psoriasis. Keeping it under control and keeping those around you in the know, will help you feel more comfortable and less stressed about the condition.
Does my diet trigger psoriasis?
Yes, the symptoms of psoriasis improve or worsen, with the health of our metabolic system. Being a metabolic disease, we can relieve these symptoms with the right diet and clean digestive system. So, as a starter, start drinking juice of carrots, grapes, beetroots, and cucumber to cleanse your system. This works best if you keep a complete fast for at least 2 to 3 days straight. Once your juice fast is over, start making important changes in your diet.
Include seeds like sesame, sunflower and pumpkin seeds in your diet, along with raw fruits and vegetables. Make sure to eat at least one serving of fruits, nuts and seeds in breakfast. Avoid citrus fruits and their juices as they may upset your stomach. Lunch should consist of salad, sprouts and some light protein. It is advisable to take a light dinner, so that it doesn’t put too much pressure on your digestive system. Dinner can include soup, boiled vegetables and some whole wheat bread. Once you notice some improvement in your health, you can start adding dairy products like milk, cottage cheese and yogurt in your diet. But avoid animal fats, eggs and heavy fats like butter and hydrogenated oil. Also, do not eat any type of processed food, and dishes made of white flour and fine sugar.
You do not have to cut salt out of your diet for psoriasis completely, but stop using refined salt and use sea salt which is more natural and taste your food before adding it. Again, salt has had a bad press, but natural sea salt will help improve energy levels and relieve allergies and rashes, replace lost electrolytes and help the body resist infections. Additionally, it will also give you some of the important minerals you need.
Lecithin is a substance produced by our liver, which is very useful in treating psoriasis. In order to help our liver to produce adequate amounts of this substance, you can eat granular lecithin. Try to eat 2 to 3 tablespoons of this substance in a day. Besides, you can also take supplements of Vitamin A, C, E, B6 and B-complex to help your body fight this condition.Remember that these dietary changes will only help you as long as you follow them. There are a variety of treatments available, ranging from topical solutions such as creams or ointments, to more comprehensive or even systemic treatments used when the Psoriasis extends beyond the scalp to significant portions of the skin.
