What is ashwagandha?
Ashwagandha is an Indian ginseng that is also known as winter cherry and its roots have been utilized for millenniums by Ayurveda practitioners. Is ashwagandha safe?

Using ashwagandha in conjunction with triazolam and barbiturates may boost the sedative effects of triazolam and barbiturates. In lab settings, ashwagandha may lead to false elevations in levels of digoxin immunoassay. Not many adverse reactions are reported because of using ashwagandha, although there was a case where a 32-year-old woman suffered from thyrotoxicosis (hyperthyroidism) after taking the herb to address chronic fatigue. How much ashwagandha to take?
Plain root powder: 5 grams in warm water or milk morning and night, sweetened with honey or raw sugar. It can also be taken as a milk decoction or prepared in ghee.
Extract powder (2.5% withanolides): the recommended dosage is 500 mg, taken 2-3 times per day with meals or water.

The 2 tonics ashwagandha and vidari will put on weight, vidari is also given to children who are underweight and to seniors because it enhances semen for men, a moisturizing tonic (increases Kapha) balances and supports vata and pitta, safe to take for most people. You might start with 1/4 tsp of each in water 3 times daily.
